OMNIVISION has announced several new OVMed® ultra-thin medical-grade LED cable modules for single-use endoscopes. The new solutions integrate an image sensor, wafer-level optics, mini-LED illumination and cabling, targeting manufacturers that need compact chip-on-tip imaging and a shorter development path.

The launch is important not only because the modules are smaller. It also highlights a broader direction in endoscope camera design:

The distal camera, illumination, cable and mechanical structure increasingly need to be considered as one system.

From a Camera Module to a Complete Distal Imaging System

In an endoscope, reducing the camera size is only one part of miniaturization.

The distal tip must still provide enough space for illumination, wiring, working channels and mechanical structures. A smaller image sensor is useful only when the lens, cable and lighting arrangement can fit the same diameter and still provide usable images.

OMNIVISION’s new OVMed modules combine the image sensor with wafer-level optics, illumination and cabling. They support OCHTA, OCHFA, OCHSA and OCH2B CameraCubeChip® platforms and are intended for multiple types of medical endoscopes.

For endoscope developers, this means the camera should be evaluated as part of the complete distal-tip architecture rather than as an isolated component.

Ultra-Thin Cables Matter to More Than Diameter

The cable inside an endoscope must carry image data through a long, narrow and often flexible path.

Making it thinner helps reduce the shaft diameter, but cable design must also consider flexibility, signal integrity, mechanical robustness and electromagnetic interference.

OMNIVISION states that its new modules are designed with EMC/EMI shielding in accordance with IEC 60601 requirements and are optimized for thin diameter, flexibility and mechanical robustness.

This is a useful reminder for endoscope camera projects:

Cable length and diameter should not be specified alone.

The bending requirement, connector, signal path and operating environment should be defined at the same time.

Illumination Is Part of Image Quality

Integrating mini-LED illumination near the distal camera can simplify the optical path and support compact single-use designs.

However, adding LEDs does not automatically guarantee good endoscopic images.

The illumination angle, brightness, distance to the target, lens FOV and reflective characteristics of the observed surface all affect the result.

Uneven lighting, glare or insufficient illumination can reduce useful detail even when the image sensor itself performs well.

For this reason, camera and LED layout should be evaluated together during module development.

Customization Still Matters

OMNIVISION notes that its cable modules can be customized around the camera, cable type, end connector, LED illumination and distal-tip geometry.

This reflects an important reality in endoscope development:

There is rarely one universal module configuration.

Different projects may require different outer diameters, viewing directions, working distances, cable lengths, illumination arrangements and host connections.

Before selecting or customizing an endoscope camera module, it is useful to define:

  • required outer diameter and available distal-tip space;

  • resolution and image requirement;

  • FOV and working distance;

  • front-view or side-view direction;

  • LED quantity and illumination control;

  • cable length, flexibility and connector;

  • waterproofing or sterilization requirements;

  • host interface and image-processing path.

What This Means for Endoscope Camera Module Development

OMNIVISION’s latest OVMed launch shows that endoscope imaging is moving toward more integrated and application-specific solutions.

The image sensor remains important, but successful integration also depends on optics, illumination, cable design, mechanical size and system validation.

For SincereFull endoscope camera module projects, we follow the same system-level principle:

Start with the required device diameter and imaging task, then define the lens, illumination, cable and interface around the actual application.

Whether the project is for medical endoscopy, industrial inspection, veterinary imaging, dental/oral observation or another compact inspection device, the goal is not simply to make the camera smaller.

The goal is to make the complete imaging path fit the device and deliver the required image under real working conditions.

For medical projects, regulatory, sterilization and biocompatibility requirements should be defined separately and verified for the final device; they should not be inferred from the image sensor or camera module alone.
