Introduction
Most endoscope cameras look straight ahead – at what’s directly in front of the tip. But many inspection tasks require looking sideways: checking the inner wall of a pipe, the side of a cylinder bore, or a lateral tissue surface. A side-view optical system redirects the view by 90 degrees (or another angle) relative to the insertion axis. This lets you see where the scope cannot physically bend. At Sincere, we manufacture cmos module camera solutions for over 30 years, including endoscope camera module designs with side‑view optics.
What Is a Side-View Optical System?
In a forward‑view endoscope, the camera looks straight out of the tip. In a side-view Endoscope, a prism or mirror is placed in front of the lens to bend the light path by 90 degrees. The camera itself stays forward, but the optical path turns sideways.
The system includes:
A miniature cmos module camera (sensor + lens)
A right‑angle prism or tiny mirror
A side window in the housing
LED illumination aimed sideways
A side-view Endoscope can be rigid (fixed angle) or have a rotating prism to view different directions.
Forward View vs. Side View
Feature | Forward View | Side View |
|---|---|---|
Viewing direction | Along insertion | Perpendicular |
Best for | Navigating cavities | Inspecting walls |
Tip diameter | Smaller (no prism) | Slightly larger |
Typical use | Colonoscopy, bronchoscopy | Cylinder walls, pipe interiors |
How It Works
Light from the target (e.g., a pipe wall) enters through a side window. It hits a 90° prism, which reflects the light toward the camera’s lens. The lens focuses the image onto the cmos module camera sensor. The sensor converts light to signals sent through the cable to a display. LEDs are placed around the side window to illuminate the area without creating shadows.
Types
Fixed Side‑View – A prism glued in front of the lens. Viewing direction is fixed (commonly 90°). Simple, robust, low cost. Used in many medical endoscope camera module and industrial borescopes.
Rotating Side‑View – The prism can be rotated (manually or motorised) to view 0° to 90° or more. More flexible but complex.
Dual‑View – Two cameras: one forward, one side. User switches between views. Used in high‑end industrial borescopes.
Applications
Medical Endoscopy – A medical endoscope camera module with side‑view is used in arthroscopy (joint surfaces), ureteroscopy (side walls of ureter), bronchoscopy (side airway branches), and laparoscopy (lateral organ surfaces).
Industrial Inspection – Automotive: inspecting cylinder walls through spark plug holes. A mini endoscope camera module with side‑view reveals scratches on the cylinder bore. Pipe inspection: checking weld seams on inner walls. Aerospace: inspecting turbine blades from a side angle.
Consumer USB Endoscopes – A usb endoscope camera module with a clip‑on mirror is popular for DIY car engine inspection. Professional side‑view modules have fixed prisms for better reliability.
Advantages
Accesses perpendicular surfaces without bending the scope.
Constant working distance to the wall.
Consistent image quality because the optical path is optimised.
Limitations
Slightly larger tip diameter.
No forward view – must use a separate navigation method.
Illumination is harder to direct sideways without glare.
Higher cost than forward‑view.
Choosing a Side-View Module
Application | Recommended |
|---|---|
Medical arthroscopy | Medical endoscope camera module, 1080p, 2–4mm, fixed 90° |
Industrial cylinder inspection | Mini endoscope camera module, 3.9–5.5mm, 720p/1080p, side‑view prism |
Pipe weld inspection | Mini endoscope camera module, IP67, wide FOV, side‑view with adjustable LEDs |
DIY automotive | Usb endoscope camera module with clip‑on mirror |
Professional borescope | Endoscope camera module, 1080p/4K, rotating side‑view |
Sincere’s Side-View Modules
At Sincere, we design and manufacture cmos module camera solutions for side‑view:
Side-view Endoscope – Custom prism angles (70°, 90°, 110°), diameters from 2.8mm to 8mm.
Endoscope camera module – Integrated side‑view optics with AR‑coated prisms.
Mini endoscope camera module – Ultra‑compact side‑view (down to 3mm diameter).
Medical endoscope camera module – Sterilizable, biocompatible, 1080p or 4K.
Usb endoscope camera module – Plug‑and‑play UVC side‑view cameras for industrial and DIY.
Cmos module camera – Sony IMX sensors (IMX290, IMX307, IMX415) with side‑view prism.
Summary
A side-view optical system uses a prism or mirror to redirect the view perpendicular to the insertion axis. It is essential for inspecting cylinder walls, pipe interiors, and lateral tissue surfaces. Compared to forward‑view, side‑view has a slightly larger tip but reaches areas that a straight scope cannot. Whether you need a medical endoscope camera module for surgery, a mini endoscope camera module for industrial inspection, or a usb endoscope camera module for DIY, understanding side‑view optics helps you choose the right tool.
